Brief 3 – Final Images

Image 1: Portrait of stranger

strangerDSC_0031

For the image of a stranger, I was inspired by the photographer Rineke DijkstraThis is because I liked how the facial expressions and body language of the models shown through the images showed them to look awkward and uncomfortable. I liked this idea as I imagined when it came round to taking my stranger portrait, it may be an uncomfortable situation for the model anyway. I met this model while taking others photos around Lincoln as she asked what I was taking photos of. I took this opportunity to ask whether she would model for me which she agreed to. The photo I chose to use was the very first photo I took of her. I also gave her little direction and told her to pose how she felt comfortable. The reason behind using the very first photo taken was because this was when the model was very uncomfortable with the situation before she got used to the situation. This is the look I was hoping to get to be able to link to the pictures taken by Rineke Dijkstra.

Image 2: Self portrait

For my self portrait, I was inspired by a photographer called Dan Winters. I like how his photos are very minimalistic and have no elements that distract from the model. For this, I purposely wore a grey top against a black background as this is a common theme in Dan Winters work to make his models facial expressions and facial features stand out. To improve my self-portraits, I think it would look good to take the photo from a mid shot rather than a close up shot.

Image 3: Portrait of friend

For my portrait of a friend, my main inspiration was Bert Stern. This is because in all his photos, the models are caught off guard laughing or smiling and are seen as comfortable in their surroundings. I liked this idea for this portrait as it would highlight the idea of the model being one of my friends as she is comfortable with me. Overall, I am very happy with how this portrait turned out. If I was to take this photograph again, I would test out different backdrops to have a bit of variety in my pictures.
