Brief 2 – Process

Inspiration

Niko Vass

One artist that I did research into was Niko Vass.  His style of photography features the focus on an object in an unrelated environment. For example, he would photograph a flower amongst a pile of pebbles which is unusual place to find a flower growing. I liked this style as the idea of placing a man made object within a natural setting/surrounded by nature was a concept I wanted to include into my triptych. Below are some examples of Vass’ work that are the kind of style I am aiming for. This includes a sharp focus on the object by using a shallow depth of field so that the background is blurred.

 Irving Penn

Another artist that I looked into was Irving Penn. This style of photography stood out to me because of how minimalistic the photographs were. This was because a common theme that Irving Penn used was to use a plain white background with even lighting. However, to contrast with this, the object that was chosen to photograph was often unusual or the use of multiple objects to make the overall piece look busy. From researching this artist, I decided that I wanted to include the technique of using multiple objects against a plain background to contrast each other. Below are some examples of Irving Penn’s work.

Andre Kertesz

As well as these artists,  I also looked into Andre Kertesz. A common theme throughout Kertesz’s still life photography is to edit his photographs into a black and white filter. I liked this idea as it makes his work unique and original which I thought would be as good way to make my own work original and recognisable. Additionally, throughout his work,  Andre Kertesz  uses interesting lighting techniques to form prominent shadows of his chosen objects. I also liked this idea as the look of the shadows with the black and white filter made the photographs looks edgy and aesthetically pleasing. Below are some examples of his work.

My ideas

As the theme of our brief is ‘found’ objects, I have decided that the objects that I will use are all wearable jewellery. I have chosen to use jewellery for my triptych as it is quite a common object that people can lose and therefore were objects that I could easily use for the topic of ‘found’. As our brief states that we must produce three different photographs, I decided that I would use three different pieces of jewellery. The first item I found was a gold ring borrowed from a friend. I chose this as it looked old and rustic and had an interesting pattern on the face that I thought would look good. The second object was an earring that I found. This earring is also gold coloured and has interesting patterns on that could be focused on. The earring was not found as a pair so I plan to draw attention to the fact that it is only one earring as opposed to where they would normally be seen as a pair. The final object I will be photographing is a bulky, beaded necklace with a large wooden flower on it. For this image, I will make the flower the main focus of the photograph but will use my inspiration from Irving Penn to make the beads and metal clasp visible to make the shot looks busier similarly to his work. Below are some test shots of the three objects.
